I think the idea was to create a bit of air flow around and through the capstan motor as it gets warm

From an early Revox A77 good condition

Used in the model 80 an sometimes is missing its easy to replace

These motors were used in several machines though I have seen they use the EM1421 in the later machines though straight off they look the same but without the lube tubes so maybe use bearings
